Low rolling resistance tires - turns out they work

The GT86 has had damn all use in the last 6 months , due to house stuff getti ng in the way. It hasn’t been near a track (boo!) and has hardly even been on the road. So it’s tak en me this long to rack up 1000km si nc e I swapped out the 6 year old OEM Primacies for new PS4s.

However having tripped over that mark:

Average f uel consumption for the 1000km before the tire swap: 6.9l/100km (34 .1 mp(US) g ).

Avera ge for the 1000 km since: 7.6l/100km (30.9 mpg ) .

Both doing the same trip routine (80% freeway, 20% town, maybe 20% of the freeway time in stop-go traffic), and measured by the trip computer .

So exactly 10% worse fuel consumption f ro m the PS4s .

Big improve ment in wet grip though - the Primacies were getting lethal towards the end.

Are the PS4s wider or heavier, or just softer?

I’m impressed with the grip from the PS4s, even on a wet skip pad in third gear above 6k RPM trying to make the back slide out, the PS4s wanted to hold on.

Less than 4 MPG? I can’t see how it’s worth it considering the severely compromised grip you mentioned.

“Great idea, guys! You know how our tires need friction with the road surface to, like, actually work and stuff? Let's make our tires have a lot LESS friction ON PURPOSE!"

Just softer. And presumably different construction.

Grip>mileage. I’ll always trade grip over mileage .

I haven’t really worked them yet. There’ s a corner near work where I used to routinely kick the back out a little - it’s about as easy in the wet on the PS4s as it was in the dry on the P rimacies, and in the dry it takes more than I’m prepared to give it on an urban road. So I’m expecting to be impressed when I give them a real  workout

With the exception of when range is the  limiting factor, I’m with you. I’ve got eco tires on the Leaf because its range is so pathetic that 10% more matters and as a city car the last little bit of grip’s no big deal. But for any “real” car I buy performance tires every time. I just left the Primacies on the 86 when I bought it because I expected to chew them up pretty quick - though that turned out not to be true, they lasted unbelievably well.

I dunno, low grip has its benefits at times: ea sie r to have fun at safe speeds, for a start :-) . And the Primacies weren’t actually that bad - I know everyone likes to diss them, but it was only towards the end of their life that the wet grip really went to shit, and dry grip was never *bad* as such, it just wasn’t as good as a max-perfo r ma nce tire .

I was actually surprised it w as as much as 4mpg different - rolling resis ta nce is onl y one compon ent of total losses, so to make 10% difference to the total they must have made 25%+ improve ment to   rolling resis t ance, which is pretty impressive considering grip’s not THAT com promised.

But no, I wouldn’t make that tradeoff again for a few mpg. Which is why it didn’t get new Primacies to replace the old ones.

You caught me - hypermil ing’s the only reason I boug ht a sportscar :-).

Model X’s are better to draft behind if you can find ‘em though - you could fit an entire grid of T oyobarus into the wind shadow of one of those monsters.

I always wondered how much of a difference that made.
